Eswatini Brushes

Handmade African hand brushes and decorative brooms in colorways from black and rust to malachite green and goldenrod yellow, woven from hand-dyed Lutindzi grass and hand-spun sisal. Each one is a working whisk brush and a piece of modern woven wall decor, with a sisal loop for hanging. Made by women weavers in the cooperatives of Eswatini. Wms&Co. is the only shop carrying them in the United States.

The brushes begin in Paris, where Delphine Mériaux and Agathe Pautrot draw their forms, and end in Eswatini, where women weavers make each one by hand. The designers call the project a lively collaboration. They chose a stitched sisal technique because it is quicker for the cooperatives to execute and leaves wide creative scope, and the weavers bring their artistry in color. Two cooperatives in the Manzini region, Siyaphambili in Makhungutja and Indzaba Yami in KaNdinda, do the weaving.

Sweep a tabletop with one, then hang it back on the wall, where the weaving and color take over. Hang one, or a dozen. Grouped on a wall, the colorways read as a palette, which is how the designers show them in exhibition.
