Hi Kelly, thank you for letting us know — I'm sorry the match strike has been frustrating. One important detail that's easy to miss: the brass striker is designed to work specifically with 'strike anywhere' matches (the kind with the white tip), which we note on the product page. Standard safety matches only ignite on their own box striker, so they won't spark on the brass no matter how you strike them.
If you give it a try with strike-anywhere matches (Diamond and UCO both make them, and they're easy to find at grocery and hardware stores), I think you'll have a much better experience — it should light reliably with a firm, quick strike.
