Home Scenting

Scent belongs in a house the way it belongs in a forest: from the material itself. Every candle, incense, essential oil, and soap here is made from plant, wood, or resin by small makers in Japan, Finland, and the United States who work with what grows around them. Hinoki cypress, palo santo, Finnish birch, American beeswax: earthy, clean, and specific. Nothing here is designed to smell like something else. It smells like what it is.

Incense is the plainest proof, a stick of cedar or sandalwood and a match, but the same holds across the shelf. Candles carry these materials into the evening, essential oils and room sprays into the air, and soap to the sink, each one chosen because it does one thing to a room and does it clearly.
