Hare no Hi Japanese Wall Calendar 2027: Handmade Paper
A 2027 Japanese wall calendar built around hare no hi, the special days of the Japanese year: New Year, coming-of-age ceremonies, and the seasonal festivals that mark the months. Each month has its own celebration, drawn in bold, flat graphics and explained in a few lines of Japanese and English. February belongs to Setsubun, when beans are thrown at demons to send misfortune away. March belongs to Hina-matsuri, the Dolls Festival. On the cover, a sheep built from a cloud of circles for the Year of the Sheep.
Every sheet is paper handmade in Nepal, formed by traditional hand-papermaking and hand-colored one at a time by artisans. The color sits soft and a little uneven, and each calendar varies slightly from the next. The date grid is small and full of information: week numbers, a running count of the days passed and the days left in the year, and the traditional Japanese day-fortunes beside each date. It hangs from a cotton cord, as much a thing to look at as a way to keep the date.
