Nittosha Blue Label Matches
Indigo and white, the oldest Japanese palette, on a box of matches made yesterday. Nittosha has been striking fires in Himeji since 1900, and the Blue Label is its modern classic: a retro box design revived in deep indigo, with the color carried all the way into the sticks themselves.
A small object that gets used, struck for a candle or a stick of incense, and somehow never put away.
Nittosha began in Himeji in 1900, when Hiromatsu Onishi started making matchboxes, and grew on advertising matches, the printed boxes that shops and cafés once handed out across Japan. Today it is one of the few manufacturers in Japan still making matches from start to finish.
