Tsuki-Jiri Oak Tray

A tray hand-carved from tsuki-jiri: the solid, dense cores and end-pieces left over after Mori Kougei, a small Tokushima workshop, slices its veneer sheets. Too dense to cut into veneer, each piece is shaped by hand instead into a single ridged tray, its grain never repeating, no two ever alike. Use it for sushi, for keys by the door, or for nothing at all.

Sealed against heat, spills, and the small damages of daily life, so its beauty survives actual use. Wipe it clean, and let it live wherever things get set down.

Mori Kougei has shaped wood in Tokushima since 1953, a family workshop now in its third generation: founder Masaichi Mori, his son Kenichi, and today his grandson Hiroyuki, the workshop's director.
