Yun Hai Lunisolar Almanac: 2027 Tear-Off Wall Calendar

$60.00

A 2027 tear-off wall calendar from Brooklyn's Yun Hai, and a contemporary graphic design riff on the lunisolar almanac, the Chinese old yellow calendar, 老黃曆, that hangs on walls across Taiwan. The printed almanac is vernacular design at its densest, a whole day of dates, omens and advice packed onto one page. This version keeps that density and redraws the page in blue and red on translucent paper, so that tomorrow ghosts through today.

Each day has its own sheet: an oversized numeral, the weekday in English and Chinese, the lunar date, the solar term, the moon phase, Chinese astrology, and a panel of auspicious and inauspicious activities. Taiwanese and US holidays are marked, and the predictions are translated into English from an established Taiwanese almanac source. Weekends share a sheet with blue architectural photographs of Taiwanese buildings, and Lunar New Year and the other major Taiwanese holidays get blue line illustrations. Pages are perforated to tear away cleanly, and in Taiwan the used sheet goes on as scratch paper or gift wrap. A red backing card stamped in gold foil holds the pad, with a hanging hole for the wall. Made in Taiwan, about the size of a paperback.

Yun Hai is a Taiwanese pantry and design shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, founded by Lisa Cheng Smith and named for 雲海, the sea of clouds seen from Taiwan's mountains. This almanac was designed with O.OO, a Taipei graphic design studio working in risograph printing and experimental visual design.
